Human Development Fellowship

The Dickey Center offers a fellowship program for students interested in field-based and analytical careers related to human development.

Dartmouth has a cadre of faculty, researchers, and students—not to mention our alumni—actively working in human development. But students need to develop the technical skills and gain professional experiences in order to work in development internationally. The Human Development Fellowship program helps a select group of Dartmouth’s top students to build these analytical competencies and train for engaged .

Majors in any field may apply, but applicants must have a GPA above 3.6. Fellows must demonstrate a sustained engagement with development issues and an exceptional academic and co-curricular record at Dartmouth.

Program Features

  • Opportunities for paid on-campus research assistantships to work with a faculty mentor doing research on human development.
  • Opportunities for advanced training through hands-on workshops, special lectures, simulation exercises, and attendance at conferences.
  • Eligibility for paid internships with partner organizations focused on policy reform, grassroots project implementation, and/or evidence-based research in human development.
  • Community Building through Fellowship cohort meetings and peer exchanges.

Eligibility

Applications are judged on a variety of factors including: demonstrated interest in human development, grades in relevant courses, interest in applied research, and the relationship of the Fellowship to the student's academic and career goals.

HD Fellowships begin in the Fall term. Students may not participate in other funded research programs (e.g. Presidential Scholar, Junior Research Scholars, Neukom Scholars) in the same terms that they are engaging in research for HDF.  Non-funded research opportunities such as Mellon Mays can be combined with a Human Development Fellowship.

On-campus, paid research assistantships with faculty require a commitment of 7-12 hours per week at standard campus rates. Off-campus funded internships require a full-time commitment. Recipients are expected to take a leadership role in Human Development Fellowship programming, including participation in lectures and workshops.
